In celebration of our anniversary, the JP Social Committee organized free snow cones. Nearly 200 snow cones were shared with the community. This was our way to scatter a little kindness on a hot summer day. Thank you to the team from Sno Biz and thank you to everyone who came out and join us in celebrating 47 Years of excellent services.
July was observed as Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Month. The JP Society Committee shared information and distributed sunglasses and visors to help raise awareness. The goal was to spread the word about how important it is to protect everyone’s skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.
On June 24, in honor of National Safety Month, the Fitzgerald Fire Department was invited to come and share some important Fire Safety tips. Their support and participation was greatly appreciated.
The Long Road Home celebration was held on June 20. This was the 120th anniversary of the Olmstead decision by the U.S. Supreme Court – the end of the “Long Road Home” for Americans with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The Long Road Home began with two Georgia women, Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, who were involuntarily admitted to the psychiatric unit in a state-run regional hospital. They filed suit for release under the Americans with Disability Act and won.
2019 Friends of The Jessamine Place
During the celebration, Golden Boy was named 2019 “Friends of The Jessamine Place”. This prestigious award was presented to (L to R): Pam Jordan, Tasha Martin, and Joe Griner by Shirley B. Brooks, Executive Director and Constance Manley, CFO.
Exhibits
Visitors were welcomed with a walkthrough of exhibits displaying some rich history of the Olmstead decision by the U.S. Supreme Court – that end the “Long Road Home” for Americans with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The exhibits displayed several advocacy events. This was shared by special guest Cheri Mitchell who is the National Chair of the Long Road Home from Atlanta, Georgia.
