On June 24, in honor of National Safety Month, the Fitzgerald Fire Department was invited to come and share some important Fire Safety tips. Their support and participation was greatly appreciated.
The Long Road Home celebration was held on June 20. This was the 120th anniversary of the Olmstead decision by the U.S. Supreme Court – the end of the “Long Road Home” for Americans with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The Long Road Home began with two Georgia women, Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson, who were involuntarily admitted to the psychiatric unit in a state-run regional hospital. They filed suit for release under the Americans with Disability Act and won.
During the celebration, Golden Boy was named 2019 “Friends of The Jessamine Place”. This prestigious award was presented to (L to R): Pam Jordan, Tasha Martin, and Joe Griner by Shirley B. Brooks, Executive Director and Constance Manley, CFO.
Visitors were welcomed with a walkthrough of exhibits displaying some rich history of the Olmstead decision by the U.S. Supreme Court – that end the “Long Road Home” for Americans with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The exhibits displayed several advocacy events. This was shared by special guest Cheri Mitchell who is the National Chair of the Long Road Home from Atlanta, Georgia.

On May 16 & 17, 2019, the agency’s annual Leadership Retreat was held in Americus, Georgia at the Historic Best Western Plus Windsor Hotel located in the heart of downtown Americus, Georgia. This year’s retreat theme was “Out of the Maze”, which is the sequel to the book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson.
On Thursday, May 16 – the group enjoyed at trolley ride that toured some the city’s area attractions and historical district.
