Overview
People First is an international organization of people with disabilities. The organization has
two primary focuses, self-advocacy and self-help. Self-advocacy means the members learn
how to speak for themselves and make decisions about what they want to do with their lives.
Self-help means the members help each other with problems, making friends and reaching
out to other people. The purpose of People First is to help the members enhance their
self-esteem, heighten their self-confidence and be effective self-advocate. It is a fundamental
belief every person can learn self-advocacy skills especially when given a chance. People
First of Fitzgerald (charter member of People First International) is a group of people working
together locally to help each other take charge of their lives. Learning how to make decisions
and choices in life in order to be more independent while also learning their rights and
responsibilities. We support each other and gain confidence to speak about what we believe.

To listen to others

To participate to the best of our ability
To solve problems
To stand strong on what we believe in
People First of Fitzgerald is a group of people working together to help each other take charge
of our lives.  We are learning how to make decisions and choices in life in order to be more
independent.  We are learning our rights and responsibilities.  We support each other and gain
confidence to speak about what we believe.
